Nicks & Nacks

Resting Tree Swallow, Bison Paddock

I've been thinking that the main drawback to using my Panasonic FZ80D as opposed to my Nikon D800E is in their close-up capabilities, so I thought I'd do a little informal comparison today, using the Nikon with a trusty old (but sharp) manual-focus 200mm f/4 macro lens. I mean "old" as in, I bought it in the last century for my Nikon F3.

The upshot of the comparison is that, as far as shooting for the web is concerned it's kind of a wash. As always, you can click on the image to see it bigger, and I wonder if you can really tell which shots came from the D800 vs. the FZ80.

At the bottom of the post are a couple of phone snaps from the Ruth Asawa restrospective at SFMOMA. Definitely worth experiencing her amazing wire sculptures and other work. I was interested to learn that as an art student at Black Mountain College she had to study math. Many of her sculptures reminded me of the kinds of geometrical patterns common in the natural world, and some even reminded me of computer simulations of black holes.
